Specifications of procalcitonin test :

• In general, patients with severe sepsis and septic shock have high PCT levels. A high level of PCT (>2 ng/mL or >10 ng/mL, respectively) is a red flag that indicates a significant risk of organ dysfunction due to systemic inflammation and necessitates rapid treatment of the patient.
• Procalcitonin levels of 0.15 ng/mL in children older than 72 hours and 0.15 ng/mL in adults make a diagnosis of severe bacterial infection implausible. Because localised infections (without systemic indications) can be linked with such low levels, procalcitonin levels between 0.15 and 2.0 ng/mL do not rule out infection.
