  • Salmonella typhi (Typhoid Fever) and S. paratyphi (Paratyphoid Fever) Typhoid and paratyphoid fevers are commonly grouped together under the collective term 'enteric fever'. Typhoid fever was once a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world with a case fatality rate of approximately 15%.
  • Typhoid fever is an acute infectious illness associated with fever that is most often caused by the Salmonella typhi bacteria. It can also be caused by Salmonella paratyphi, a related bacterium that usually leads to a less severe illness.
  • Salmonella outbreaks are commonly associated with eggs, meat and poultry, but these bacteria can also contaminate other foods such as fruits and vegetables. Foods that are most likely to contain Salmonella include raw or undercooked eggs, raw milk, contaminated water, and raw or undercooked meats.
  • The symptoms of salmonella-induced gastroenteritis includes stomach cramps, bloody stools, chills, diarrhoea, fever, headache, muscle pains, nausea
  • If someone have a salmonella infection, it usually goes away on its own after a few days. But if you still are having symptoms more than a week after first getting the infection, then it is advised to see a doctor.
