DIALYSIS MACHINE

A dialysis machine is a device used to filter waste products, excess water, and other impurities from the blood of people whose kidneys are not functioning properly. It helps to keep people alive whose kidneys have stopped working properly.

WORK: Dialysis machine works with the help of a filter called a dialyzer or artificial kidney. Through this machine, the patient’s blood circulate from a filter or artificial kidney. Dialyzer contains a semipermeable membrane which allows waste products and excess water to pass from the blood into a dialysis solution called dialysate. Then the cleaned blood is returned to the patient's body.

TYPES

There are two main types of dialysis machines mentioned as below:

Hemodialysis machines

• This machineis used for haemodialysis, it is a type of treatment that filters blood from outside the body.
• In this, patient's blood is circulated through a dialyzer and then returned to the body, mainly it is an access point in the arm or leg.
• These treatments performed three times a week and each session lasts for 3–5 hours.

Peritoneal machines

• This type of dialysis is used for peritoneal membrane (a natural filter in the abdomen) to filter the blood.
• In this, a sterile dialysis solution is insert into the peritoneal cavity, and waste products and excess water from the blood goes through the peritoneal membrane into the solution.
• The used solution is then drained out and replaced with fresh solution, it is done either manually or with the help of an automated peritoneal dialysis machine.
